Komen for the Cure® ranked number one in a recent Harris Interactive poll as the most valued non-profit brand and the charity people are most likely to donate money to. Additionally, Komen for the Cure ranked second on the 2010 list of the nation’s most trusted charities. Thank you to all who help us daily in the fight to end breast cancer!

History

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.

Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the organization Nancy started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Across the country, that promise is upheld by a network of 121 local Affiliate offices. At the heart of each Affiliate is a person or group of people who, like Susan, wanted to make a difference.

The Hawaii Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, established in 1999, sponsors fundraising events including the Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure®. In 1995, the first Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure® was held in Honolulu with 800 participants. We are now celebrating our 16th Annual Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure® and our race has progressed. We hope to have 6,500 runners or walkers this year helping to raise money to fund screening, treatment and prevention for the underserved and uninsured women of Hawaii and to provide education about breast cancer.

Up to 75% of net funds raised from the Race and other fundraising events are provided to support other local non-profit organizations and educational institutions. No less than 25% of net funds raised support breast cancer research. To date, we have funded over $1,000,000.00 for breast health and breast cancer education, screening and treatment throughout the state of Hawaii.

This year we will be sponsoring our 6th Annual Survivor’s Conference and we expect over 150 survivors to attend. It is an exhilarating event that gives women an opportunity to support each other, to learn the about the latest treatments and to honor their co-survivors.
