HUI MALAMA OLA NA OIWI
NO KA WAHINE HEALTH FAIR - Funds
will finance a Health Fair at the Primary Care Facility
in downtown
Hilo for Native Hawa ians, Pacific Islanders, and Filipino
women in East Hawaii. This fair will bring together physicians
and organizations to provide breast care clinical screening
and exams, breast cancer education, organizations with
resources for cancer diagnosed women, and follow-up support
systems.
WEST HAWAII COMM. HEALTH CENTER
Reaching
Out To South Kona Marshallese and Native Hawaiian Women
- This project will extend breast health education and
services to
Marchallese and Native Hawaiian women
who rank high among those with unmet breast health needs.
Emphasis will be on the uninsured and underinsured and
focus on two breast health events, in partnership with
community and church leadership to provide education
in an optimal environment for these groups.
HAWAII MEDICAL CENTER
Breast Cancer Screening and Breast Health Education for
Medically underserved and Uninsured Women Ages 40 to
49 - This project will provide free screening mammograms,
clinical breast exams, and culturally and linguistically
appropriate breast health education and information
to underserved women aged 40 – 49—Asian
American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian women.
KOKUA KALIHI VALLEY
Breast Cancer
Prevention for the Women of Kalihi Valley - Funds
will be used to expand and improve KKV’s culturally
appropriate, community based breast health program established
in 2006 with the help of Komen. Activities will incluse
outreach at community fairs, culturally appropriate breast
health education sessions in a variety of settings, intensive
training for ten peer educators to assist women to access
preventative testing. Focus will be on low income Native
Hawaiian, Filipina, Samoan, Micronesian, and other Asian/Pacific
Island women of Kalihi Valley.
PAPA OLA LOKAHI
Second Annual Cancer Patient Navigation Conference - This
two-day conference will convene about 100 participants,
including trained CPN’s. Objectives are to expand
knowledge, capacity, and resource networks of CPNs who
assist breast cancer patients; to foster relationships
between CPNs and cancer care providers; and to increase
awareness of health providers of the role of CPNs in
both community and clinical setting in facilitating and
enhancing care for breast cancer patients.
WAIMANALO HEALTH CENTER
Waimanalo Health Center seeks to provide breast cancer
screenings to underinsured and uninsured women ages
30 – 49 years of age. The Center will also provide
breast cancer awareness presentations and enabling
services and support to women who otherwise wouldn’t
be able to receive care.
MOLOKAI GENERAL HOSPITAL
Molokai General Hospital Breast Cancer Enhancement - This
project aims to improve the continuity of breast care
on Molokai and decrease the time interval from diagnosis
to treatment through addressing the island’s health
care disparity factors of geographic isolation, insufficient
healthcare resources, economics, limited cancer knowledge,
and motivation. The project will help support navigational
services, which provide patients culturally appropriate
assistance throughout the continuum of care.
HAMAKUA HEALTH CENTER
The Breast
Health Program - This
program will provide free screening mammograms and
follow-up diagnostics for
at least 40 Big Island women under the age of fifty who
have little or no insurance coverage. Focus will be on
groups of women who, statistically, have higher rates
of late-stage disease, commonly due to barriers to education
efforts promoting the importance of early diagnosis and
treatment.
BAY CLINIC
Breast Cancer Prevention
Program - This plan will
expand access to breast cancer screening within socioeconomically
disadvantaged high risk populations by opening a dedicated
women’s health center in Pahoa. Culturally competent
care and outreach services to Native Hawaiian, Asian
American, or other Pacific Islander women would be provided,
to include free mammograms and follow-up care, such as
biopsies and referral to specialists for low income/uninsured
women.
KOOLAULOA COMM. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
CENTER
Expanding Breast Education,
Exam, and Screening - This
program will provide culturally competent education and
outreach for women with the greatest unmet breast health
needs. It will educate and encourage of KCHWC’s
female clients who should be receiving breast exams and
mammograms to get them regularly and will provide for
diagnostic procedures/tests for a limited number of uninsured
women at KCHWC (who do not qualify for other programs)
with abnormal breast findings.
WAIKIKI HEALTH CENTER
Celebrating Women/Celebrating Diversity: 26 Breast Cancer
Screening and Education Events Targeting Uninsured and
Underserved Women from Hawaii’s Diverse Populations
- Over a 12-month period, 26 clinical breast cancer screening
and education events will be conducted at the Center.
Services will be provided on a sliding-fee scale for
those without insurance—no one will be turned away
for inability to pay. Hawaii’s diverse ethnic populations
(Filipinas, Latinas, Native Hawaiians) and affinity groups
(mothers and daughters, best friends, etc.) will be encouraged
to attend.
