The Hawaii Affiliate
of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, established in 1999, sponsors
fundraising events including the Komen Hawaii Race
for the Cure and is a valuable resource for information and education
programs on breast cancer health throughout the Hawaiian islands.
In
1995, the first Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure was held in Honolulu
with 800 participants. By 2006, the 12th Annual Komen Hawaii
Race for the Cure grew to over 7200 registered participants.
Up to 75%
of net funds raised from the Race and other fundraising events
support local non-profit organizations, educational institutions
and government entities programs. No less than 25% of net funds
raised support breast cancer research. To date,
we have funded
over $1,000,000.00 for breast health and breast cancer education,
screening and treatment throughout the state of Hawaii.
In 2005,
the Affiliate sponsored its 1st Annual Survivors Conference with
over 150 breast cancer survivors in attendance. It was an
exhilarating event that gives women an opportunity to support each
other, to learn
the about the latest treatments and to honor their co-survivors.
To celebrate granting of over $1 Million to Hawaii’s breast
cancer prevention, education and treatment programs, Komen Hawaii
hosted “Pink Martini Night”. This event was the first
Komen Hawaii sponsored fundraising event beside the Race to support
local breast cancer awareness efforts.
